First… hemp, cannabis, marijuana (slang term)… they’re from the exact same plant species – Cannabis sativa. It’s common to mistake hemp and cannabis unless you know why they’re different. The easiest way to tell? If it’s under .3% THC content then it’s hemp and is classified as legal for academic and educational purposes, according to federal law. What is commonly referred to as cannabis (or medical marijuana) contains THC levels above .3% and can extend into levels between 15-30% THC. Remember, THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) is the psychoactive component of cannabis. Without these higher THC levels, there are no psychoactive effects for you.
While this is true to an extent, the simple fact of the matter remains that pure CBD oil with customer-backed qualities is a rarity in the legal hemp marketplace. Both varieties contain CBD and THC (albeit at different levels), which are the two primary compounds in the Cannabis sativa plant. The Cannabis plant is also very diverse, as it can grow in many different forms. The most common types are Sativa and Indica, but there are more, with each type having dozens – if not hundreds – of different adaptations and different ratios of active compounds, also known as cannabinoids.
Hemp-based CBD oil is NOT, I repeat, is NOT the same as raw oil produced from the whole marijuana plant. I’m getting so sick and tired of the marketing out there, I could scream. Cannabidiol from marijuana plants contains THC-A, which is not intoxicating — heating it will convert it to THC-C. This is how large amounts of THC-A can be consumed — the oil from raw marijuana plants has a higher safety profile, too. Once this market is REGULATED (and it will be), there will be very clear distinctions. At the moment, it’s up to the consumer to do his/her homework. Until then, please don’t fall for some of this marketing. Sure, Hemp CBD oil can be useful, but people are being duped into thinking it’s the same thing with the same benefits. IT IS NOT!
